Back To School Bash

Time: 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Where: 2nd Baptist Church Russellville

We will be grilling hamburgers and have volleyball set up! There will also be a band for a time of worship! The band consists of Kendall Crawford, Josh Phifer, Landon Walker, Blake Speights and Jonathan Sloan. It will be a great time to hang out and see old friends and even make some new ones! Everyone is welcome, so bring all your friends along!

I'm just getting around to updating the blog....but in case you haven't noticed already the email addresses for the church and staff have changed. The new addresses are listed on the left. First parts are the same but the ending is @suddenlinkmail.com now.

Hope you are enjoying the last few weeks of summer. We are excited for you to be coming back or joining us new here at Second Baptist Russellville. Some things have changed during the summer...such as the addition of a new staff member, Jonathan Whitlock. Also plans are being made to change some things for the college students in the fall. It's an exciting time for all of us.

If you know of any new freshmen coming to ATU please invite them to visit or even send us their info so we can send them an invite from the church.

Summer Bible Study

Since it is summer and most of ya'll have gone home we are going to try a new study :). We are reading the book "Crazy Love" by Francis Chan. www.crazylovebook.com So far it has been an awesome book with a strong message that God is CRAZY in love with us so we should be crazy in love with Him. We are going to read a chapter a week and then just have a type of book discussion.
In the fall, if we really like the book this summer then we will try to do the study again.

Hope you are having a great summer! I can't wait to hear reports in the fall from all you have done and how God has used you. I know many of you had big plans for the summer. Don't forget to stop by if you are in town to visit!!

I have heard lots of compliments on the college choir and their song they sang last Sunday. You all did a great job!! Also BJ did a wonderful job preaching. I look forward to hearing more from him.
We will be leaving at 6 am on Monday for the Spring Break Mission Trip. Those who are going should be at the church about 5:30ish (if we are not picking you up on the way). We will return on Wed about midnight. Pack clothes you don't care to get paint on....as well as something to wear to church on Wed night. We have 16 of us going and I'm super excited that I got child care worked out so I can come!!
If you are not going on the trip I pray that you have a safe, relaxful spring break!!!

It has been so good to see such a big group here on Wed nights! If you haven't been coming let me invite ya now.....each week we meet with the youth group (in youth room) for a time of praise and worship and then we go to our room for Bible Study. Lately different students have been leading the study. 6:00 pm!!!

Sunday School has been really down since break.....I understand that the weekends are very busy but if you are in town we'd love to have you there.....9:30 am.

Sunday nights at 5:00 we have started a Collegiate Choir. The songs are ones you already know. No auditions are needed and come on even if you think you can't sing!!! We are brainstorming names for the group and hope to do some songs in church soon.

Spring Break Mission Trip!!!! Please be making plans and praying about if you will come with us to Crawfordsville, AR on our Collegiate Mission Trip. We will leave the afternoon of Sunday, March 22 and be back late Wed, March 25th. The plans are to do some painting and backyard Bible clubs.

New Bible Study

For the next few weeks we are going to be doing a study on the book of Ephesians. I would like to encourage each of you to be there. This study is going to involve all your senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, and so on). Yes taste.....we will have food every morning during the study. Last week we started the study with Ephesians 1:1-23 (read if you want to catch up) and had a snack that was a blessing.......homemade cinnamon rolls. We learned that WE are God's inheritance and he has chosen us even before the world was made to receive his gift of Grace.
Each week will end with a weekly challenge for you...kinda like homework.

To prepare for this week find some time to read Ephesians 2:1-22
9:30 am in Room 213

Also....Sunday night at 5:00 is our Super Bowl Watch Party.....please invite all your friends to come....at the Kistlers.....contact the church office for a map.

It has been great to have all of you back in town. I hope your first week of classes went well.
In Sunday School we are going to start a study on the book of Ephesians.....class starts offically at 9:30 am but we don't usually start until 9:50ish so even if you think you are late come on in!!!

Super Bowl Watch Party will be at Bill and Elaine Kistler's house.....you can get a map in the SS room or from Al Ray. Yes, Elaine is from the BCM. It will start at 5 pm and we will have a short devotional during halftime. We need to have a count on who is coming so let Al Ray know by Jan 29th please.

Also new, Al Ray has started a Collegiate Choir. Rehersals are on Sunday nights at 5 pm in the choir room. You do NOT have to audition or sing really great...just come and have a great time praising God with Music.

I think everyone had a great time at our Christmas Party. We took a test from Al Ray about different Christmas Carols and then we ate some good food. Thanks to Heather W., Jill Mc., and Tiffany K for their food it was yummy! Then everyone helped make some great looking gingerbread houses.

By now I'm sure you are all studying and taking finals! I'm praying God gives you guidance and peace during the next week. Also have a safe trip home and a great Christmas break.

Tonight (wed Dec 10) is our Christmas Party. We will be having some finger foods, building gingerbread houses, and playing some games. Be sure to try to be there. Should be a relaxing time in the middle of finals. Room 213 as usual.

We will not meet on Wed nights again until you come back in Jan. so don't worry about missing anything :).

I have been terrible at updating this blog lately. So sorry!!!

I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving day and break. We missed all of you on Sunday but I know you were all at home with family and friends.

I sent some of you a message about babysitting for another Sunday school class ...... we have decided not to do that. Many of you will already be headed home and even my family will be out of town.

If during final week you need to get out and have a break give us a call and come on over!! I'm sure we (or my kids) can find something to get your mind off of studying for a while. On that note....I'm praying for all of you in the next few weeks as the semester comes to a close. If there is anyone who has come to the college group who is graduating in Dec please let me know...thanks!

Can't wait to see you all tonight and Sunday as we start the Christmas season!!

New Preacher!!!

The church voted this past Sunday in favor of calling Bro. Bobby Biggers at pastor. I myself am super excited!!! He has also accepted the call and will be here next month!!!
Here is a copy of his acceptance letter:

Second Baptist Church Russellville,

It is with prayer, humility, joy, and great anticipation that I accept the call as pastor of Second Baptist Church of Russellville. I look forward to serving you, getting to know you and seeing how the Lord will glorify Himself and use us together in the years to come.
Please pray for myself and my family as we make this transition in the upcoming weeks. Also, please pray for Stamford Baptist Church as they begin a new chapter in the life of this great church. I promise that we will continue praying for y'all! (Or you all or you guys, however you want to say it;) I may have to learn how to speak Southern again.
May people in Russellville, Arkansas, North America and around the world come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior through the gospel going out from Second Baptist and other Gospel preaching, Christ centered, Scripture saturated churches. May we be obedient Christ followers who make disciples and are salt and light in a world that needs Jesus.

Bobby Biggers

This past Sunday was a very exciting day in the life of SBCR. Bobby Biggers and family were there "in view of a call". We also had a potluck meal afterwards. Next Sunday (the 19th) the members will be able to vote first thing in the worship service for or against the church calling Bro Bobby as pastor here.

Didn't the Ouachita Singers do a wonderful job?? Thanks for a great turnout from you college students.
Next Sunday, Bobby Biggers will be at SBCR morning and evening to preach. There is also a potluck meal following the service....please plan to stay and eat!! Don't worry about bringing something to eat we will have plenty...and if you are worried about it and need somewhere to cook call me and you can come over here.

This week we started a study on Proverbs. The key verse this week was "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction." Proverbs 1:7. We need to gain wisdom from the Proverbs so that we can fear the Lord.
We had a good group again this week in class with even some visitors. Brittany did a wonderful job with her offertory. I really enjoy listening to all the college students when they are involved with the worship service. If you play an instrument and would like to play in the worship ensemble then talk to Al Ray he would love to have ya join.
Don't forget to come to Noonday this week (and every week) at the BCM for lunch provided by SBCR. I will be there (with Alex) so stop by and say hi!

This week in Sunday School we talked about Worship~the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity. We learned that we must set aside distractions and tune our hearts to the Lord. I pray that each of you find time to Worship God through out this week!
Next week we may try a different type of study so come on by!

The BCM dinner went really well. Thank you to all the upperclassmen who came to help. I was so excited to see you all there. We had plenty of food for everyone (even the freshmen).

Please be in prayer for Brittany's step-grandpa. He had a massive heart attack Monday night and is in stable but still critical condition.

Be thinking about something we can do on Halloween night after the Kids Festival at SBCR. Also on Oct 5 the Ouachita Singers will be at SBCR and our dear Maggie will be singing.

This past Sunday we had a good crowd in Sunday School. It is always great to have you there and even better when you bring guest!!! Our lesson was about seeking God for wisdom about decisions we face. Next Sunday (Sept 14) we will be talking about how to come to God in worship.
We also had a wonderful time at Bob Hope's on Sunday evening. Make sure if you see him you thank him.
This Monday is the BCM Progressive dinner. Upperclassmen if you want to come help please be at the church around 6 pm. Jason is going to grill burgers for us all to eat after the freshmen leave. Freshmen you should try to attend! You will get to see other churches in the area and meet other ATU freshmen.

If there is ever any event or something going on in your life we'd love to know about it. Any time you need anything please don't hesitate to call either Jason and I or Al Ray. We are here for you! Even if it's just you need to get out of the dorm and need somewhere to go.

Labor Day Weekend

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend!!!! I guess from the lack of attendance (which I was ready for) everyone went home or somewhere exciting for the weekend. For Sunday School we had one student in class so we joined the young adult class. We really just spent time talking and sharing things.
If you haven't heard yet then let me share with you that our former pastor at Second Baptist, Bro. David McLemore, passed away on Sunday. Here is a link to the obit on the funeral home page http://www.humphreyfuneral.com/ . The funeral is planned for Wed. Sept 3 at 2 pm at SBCR.
This coming Sunday we will be having fellowship after the evening worship at Bob Hope's!! Also on Sept 15 our church will be hosting one of the "stops" for the BCM freshmen progressive dinner. We would love to have some of the upperclassmen here to help serve. This will be a great opportunity for us to show the freshmen our church.

It was great to have such a big class on Sunday! We (every church member who asked) were so excited! We also had a wonderful time eating lunch together at New China.
Our lesson this week was about your own testimony. We looked at Paul's example in Acts 26. Every Christian should have 3 points: Before Christ, Encounter with Christ and After Encounter. Don't forget to always have your testimony ready to share with anyone. Also don't forget the challenge to share your testimony with someone this week! I would love to hear about it when you get that chance.
Oh and before I forget it....Ladies on Sunday nights at 5:00 pm starting Sept 7th there will be a Bible Study called Discerning the Voice of God. It will be amazing and we would love for you to join. Should be ladies of all ages in it. Priscilla Shirer wrote the study and I saw her in a conference back in Feb....she is awesome!

Our first day went really good I thought. We had 3 students there this week. I know next week will bring more in since everyone will be back on campus then. We have talked about what material we might want to study on Sunday mornings and also talked about redecorating the room some. If you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
Don't forget about lunch after church next Sunday. We are also trying to get a fellowship planned for after evening church really soon.
Don't forget to get involved at the BCM!!! Go to Noonday and Fuel and anything else there. Our church will be providing the meal very soon one Wed.

New Year

So Jason and I (Kim) will be taking over the teaching responsiblities as of Aug 17, 2008 for the college sunday school class. I know most of ya'll won't be back to campus yet til the next week but if you are in town or know of a Freshman who will be here tell them to stop by.
